Barren landscape on outside=despair and isolation.

Searching wilderness for meaning of life.

Boat=lived life in the fast lane.

Clock=time ran out at 24.

City and chains=pulled towards fame and couldn't escape.

Tape measure=trying to live up to personal ambitions and desires.

Scrap heap=potential destiny had he not chosen fame and died, but lived for years and faded into obscurity, ending up on the proverbial scrap heap.
